The caves are open every day of the year except on Xmas, I am not sure about the ostrich farms though. You should definitely pay a visit to the caves, they are awesome, and I usually hate going to these types of tourist attractions. If it is a public holiday the banks will be closed, but you may still use the ATMs. Most shops, restaurants and bar will be open.

Most major retails will be open.
Im not sure about that Cango caves etc, but they usually only close for public holidays such as Christmas etc. Banks will be closed, or if open, close earlier, but you will still be able to use your Visa electron card at various outlets. Restaurants will be open
Visit http://www.cango-caves.co.za for more information about the Cango Caves- Its really beautiful!

Comment on What is the cheapest way to travel from Luxembourg to London? by Joe

One option is a bus from outside the main rail station in Luxembourg city to Frankfurt Hahn Airport (in Germany), then a Ryanair flight to London Stansted.

The bus shuttle runs hourly, takes about 2 hours, and costs between 5 and 17 € one-way if you book on-line, here: http://www.flibco.com

Ryanair flights vary, but you may find a return flight for 100 € or less. Book in advance, here: http://www.ryanair.com
Three things to be aware of: 1) You're limited to 15kg luggage + 10kg hand luggage, overweight bags cost ridiculous amounts for each extra kilo.
2) When booking, after you see the initial price of flights, there will be an extra 40€ bag and check in fee, 10€ credit card fee, and they try to convince you to buy unnecessary "priority boarding" and insurance. Be wary.
3) London Stansted Airport is located quite far out of London.

Peru is my favorite country because it's stunningly beautiful, chock-full of fascinating historical sites and fun places to explore, and the people there are lovely. Cusco is a very charming gem of a town with a cool artistic vibe, great restaurants and a sweet nightlife. There are serene places with spas / spiritual retreats nearby that are good to go to for a day or two. I studied in Cusco for three weeks last summer & had an awesome time. If you go stay in the San Blas area. A holiday in Peru will cost you a fraction of the price of any place in Europe.

In Africa I'd pick Morocco. It's a dynamic, incredibly interesting country rich in history, beauty and active pursuits, and is very affordable.

In Europe I'd pick the Czech Republic & Croatia.

Check Rick Steve's Graffiti Wall & the TripAdvisor forums for more advice / ideas.

Have an amazing adventure!

~ Pax

PS Americans call holidays "vacations" so that's why the first two posters suggested President Day, Labor Day, ect.

Most airline websites allow you to select the exact travel days and departure/arrival times to view the cost and availability. Also, websites like travelocity, expedia, hotwire, priceline and cheaptickets showcase a variety of airlines along with the cheapest price. The best way to track airline flights is to form an excel spreadsheet. Include the travel website names going down the column and the day you checked the rates across the rows. Check each website daily and keep track of the rate pattern. This is a tedious assignment, but can save you lots of money. Also, your trip is well in the future, so you have some room to wait to purchase. Be cautious of Holiday rates. Booking buddy and sidestep may be helpful as well. Good luck!

If you were to get a direct flight from Boston to Portland, Oregon it would be approx. 6 Hrs 0 Min. Not sure of the cost but you can search any of the travel site (orbitz, kayak, etc..) for the flights between KBOS to KPDX.
